Arrival of Kjaersti Sirgurdsdatter

Kjaersti Sigurdsdatter is the first ascendant of the Andreassend family to arrive in New Zealand on Friday 6th of December 1872 as an assisted passenger. The Palmerston arrived at Port Chalmers after starting the journey in Hamburg Germany 28 July earlier that year. Kjasesti (also know as Kristi/ Christina) married John Clark (1826-1886) and was the mother of Hannah Bertha Clark(1877-1957) as well as several other children including Louisa Kristine Clark (1874- ), William Clark (1877-1947), George Clark(1884- ). After the death of John Clark, Kjaersti married Hans Jopheson Hansen and had two more children John Henry Hansen (1890- )and Hannah Kristine Josephine Hansen(1894-1894). There are also accounts in newspapers of the time, it wasn`t a journey without incident which was recorded in the Diary of Christen Christesen who was also a passenger on the ship. Due to an outbreak of smallpox the shop was quarratined for several weeks. The Palmerston was 978 tons and built in 1853 originally christened Charity, followed changes in ownership called La Cubana 1859, Palmerston 1865, and Fredrico 1894.

The ship carried 272 passengers and had the capacity for 718, the cargo also included three locomotives for the growing colony.
