Congratulations Gordon hope the warm weather in Hong Kong is not too exhausting and the computer doesn`t overheat!
I have a charming story for you.
"Gordon was about 17 yrs of age and was travelling down the South Island from Christchurch on the train with his colleagues to Invercargill and I was given the job ( I was about 11years of age ) of taking him a large cake of chocolate as a gift from Mum. So off I ran to the local Balclutha Railway station to find this young man on the train ....but there were young men everywhere and they all looked the same as they were travelling to a Scout Jamboree or some such - They stopped for a short tea break/ sandwich but I couldn't spot him on the platform or in the carriages !!! Then the Train conductor blew his whistle and the train train whistled and off went the train to Invercargill and I was left with the large cake of chocolate still in my hand. Merci me
I knew Mum would be really disappointed and question me as to whether I had looked carefully enough - and she did - but it ended up well.
We ate Gordon's chocolate and loved the unexpected treat "
Any idea who would have sent me this? answer at the bottom

Noel and Gordon Timaru 1935

Noel left Gordon right-obviously having the TIME of their lives, too much Time on their hands, or did they just shrink? I have no idea of the occasion but Noel thought you would like it.
The answer- Jan-Claire Hughes small world!
Response from Gordon
Looked at the blog - some great stuff there - and
please pass on my thanks - belated I'm afraid -
to Jan-Claire Hughes, for the unexpected chocolate
cake. Sorry to miss out on that - but pleased to hear
that the cake found a good home !
That train trip must have been with the Canoe Club,
when we went to Milford Sound and fiordland to
paddle the waters there. A great trip !

Hi Ronald Yes that's right !!! - I remember now- it was Canoe Club boys that the train carriages was full of. Can you imagine me- just a kid - sent down to meet the train because Mum was too busy, told to look for Gordon with only a photo of him when he was 13 to go by. There I was standing on the station platform knowing that the train stopped for only 8 mins, looking for this fresh faced 19yr old who I hoped still looked 13 as that was the picture in my head. As the train squealed to a stop, the carriage doors burst open and what seemed like 100's of athletic bare legged muscled lads leapt out onto the platform - ravenous- racing to the Tearooms. They jumped over me, around me, hell bent on beating their mates to purchase the eponymous Hot Meat Pie which were known to sell out. I searched up and down the platform looking for the 13 yr old Gordon face but to no avail The the guard's whistle blew, the 100's of bare legs leapt back onto the train, doors slammed shut and .....off it went and you know the rest Thanks Gordon for refreshing those early memories for me and HAPPY BIRTHDAY. And thanks Ronald - I appreciate you "keeping me in the loop". Cheers for now JCH
